Abstract

The access to education is an important factor that determines economic security and decision making especially for women. In India, the literacy rate has increased over the period of time, however, the gender inequality still exists in all levels of education. The results of the study revealed that the higher gender inequality was registered at secondary and higher secondary levels of education. The results of the data indicate that the highest number of females in the age group 15–19 years at secondary and higher secondary levels reported that they dropped out school due to ‘education not considered necessary, has to supplement household income and has to attend domestic chores’. It indicates that household income is the major factor that impacts major on school drop-out rate particularly in the case of females. The correlation results also showed the per capita income has a significant relation with gender parity.
